I have been struggling to get an IMAP server running. I currently have uw-imap running on the FreeBSD box. But for the new OpenBSD project, I decided to try something new due to two reasons. First, it’s slow. Second, it relies on inetd to run. I really hate add more loads on this lightweight box. I finally decided to go with courier-imap which means that I have to turn to maildir instead of classic mbox. This doesn’t seem to be a problem for postfix, just one line in main.cf and it’s done :).

What the server does: it gets IP address from my ISP (comcast), uses a dynamic domain name, syncs time with time servers. It serves on my home LAN as:

• NAT
• Firewall
• Name server
• DHCP server
• Email server
• IMAP server

Other jobs I wish it do: I can ssh to the server and check emails with pine. I can also ssh to the server and wake up my Mac and PCs via WOL.

Had pf running. For now, it does nat and passes all traffic, with the following rules:

ext_if="sis0"
int_if="sis1"
 
nat on $ext_if from $int_if:network to any -> ($ext_if)
pass all

Name server seems to work fine too. On OpenBSD, named wants to chroot to /var/named but /var is symlinked to /tmp/var which is on a mfs filesystem. I have to put the configuration files under /etc/named and make a symlink in the start script.

DHCP server runs fine, no trick at all.

Next job: make postfix work, urgh….

The start script provided by flashdist mounts the fileystem readonly, which isn’t what I want. I made changes to rc script so that the root file system is now mounted read/write. I also made changes to fstab file.

I examined the script and also found it checks the existence of ssh key and optionally generates it. I have already copied the key from the host PC so I don’t need it any more. I save some space by deleting ssh-keygen, ssh-add and ssh-agent.

I decided to pull out my Soekris 4511 which is collecting dust and play something on it. I settled on OpenBSD since I want to get my feet wet on OpenBSD which I haven’t really explored too much. I have played FreeBSD on it a little bit once. I thought it’d be fun to mess with OpenBSD :).

OK, here are the first steps I took:

• Installed OpenBSD 3.7 on a PC. Partitioning is a little painful compared to FreeBSD, but not that bad with the help of a calculator. You pretty much have to write the partition table yourself
• Connect the Soekris box to the PC via a null modem cable. Then we can use “cu -l cua00 -s 19200″ to connect to the console.
• Follow this instruction http://www.nmedia.net/~chris/soekris/install.html to install a very basic system on a CF card.
• Throw in the CF card in the box and boot.

Things seem to work well so far. My goal is to replace the FreeBSD router/firewall/nat/dhcpd/named/mail server running on an old PC with this quiet box. That PC is also my file server but I guess I don’t need a file server any more. I can just use enclosures. The apache server is seldom used so I won’t bother installing it either. I used to run ipfilter but my impression is OpenBSD uses pf. Anyway, we’ll see how it goes. Time to mess with /etc/rc script, I guess.

最初聽唐朝大概是94年左右。沒有開化的耳朵，聽著各種糜糜之音。老蔣當時有盤《夢回唐朝》，就借來聽了。那時候就算所謂的流行音樂也不如現在這么商業化，可聽的東西並不多，基本都是逮著什么聽什么。之前除了崔健沒聽過什么搖滾，對搖滾也沒有什么認識。也不是說我現在就有什么認識了。最初對那張專輯並沒有太多的印象，感覺很吵，主打《夢回唐朝》還有些特點，其他都沒有留下太深刻的印象了。

我們那個時候科大的日子很緊張，沒有太多的時間發展自己的愛好，特別是我那些特別耗時間的愛好例如書法，素描。所幸聽音樂尚不算太奢侈。之后的日子仍然沒有太多可聽的。大概是95年吧，已經不記得是誰了，弄了盤《搖滾中國樂勢力》，香港紅磡體育場的現場。順便提一句，94年的香港，能在紅磡體育場開演唱會是個很高級別的待遇。去的人有竇唯，張楚，何勇,還有就是唐朝了。

錄音棚和現場是有很大區別的。雖然錄音棚可以有條件和時間把音樂做得很精致，卻缺乏現場的激情和氣憤，搖滾尤其是如此。真正開始喜歡唐朝，大概就是緣起這盤帶子的《飛翔鳥》吧。現場氣憤很熱烈，吉他和主唱都很棒。其實整盤帶子都很棒，竇唯的《高級動物》一開場就徵服了聽眾。何勇的《鐘鼓樓》也演繹得很完美。

我對音樂的口味很雜，什么都聽，有高雅的，也有庸俗的。不同的時期不同的心境有不同的最愛。唐朝的地位卻一直沒有動搖過。最近在車上放了一張CD，裡面有《月夢》，貪婪的聽了一遍又一遍，開到最大音量。熟悉的那段吉他和蕭不緊不慢拉開序幕，憂傷，宁靜，卻讓人感到窒息的壓抑，焦慮，仿佛在預示著什么。壓抑終于在一段急促的掃弦中爆發，仿佛心中沉積的所有熱情都在一瞬間迸發，達到高潮。伴奏吉他有些單調的和弦一步步的推動著高潮。心跳加速，adrenaline向上涌。高潮過后，重新恢复宁靜，蕭聲在背景中重新加入，眼前浮現的景色是凄涼的秋夜，皓月當空，秋葉已經開始敗落，蕭瑟。宁靜的蕭聲，心情卻是不安的，狂野的，放肆的。

年輕真好。
